Putting MAP on the Map: Promoting MAP International’s Annual Global Health Awards

HBE handled all logistics for the event including sponsorship materials, media interviews, venue location, emcee, catering, videography, photography, the program and run of show.

To build relationships with sponsors and the community, HBE utilized its relationships with local leaders in politics, business and health industries to create an executive committee to serve as ambassadors for the awards ceremony. HBE guided the committee, which was chaired by Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines, and Martha Brooks, chair of CARE USA. Honorary co-chairs included Billye and Hank Aaron, Ted Turner, and Ambassador Andrew. Young. HBE created and issued all sponsorship materials needed to promote the Bill Foege Global Health Awards and its mission.

The event was emceed by Chief Medical Correspondent for CNN, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, while the guest list was filled with prominent leaders and health industry professionals. The program included testimonies on the progress of global health from Dr. Bill Foege and Former Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary of Administration, John Bardis. The program also included an exciting announcement by The Metro Atlanta Chamber regarding its new initiative, Global Health ATL, which is designed to drive Atlanta’s reputation as the “center for global health.” The 2018 award recipients were President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter, co-founders of The Carter Center, for their contributions in combating diseases in Africa and Latin America and restoring global health.

For 70 years and counting, Georgia-based MAP International has served millions of people through the help of partners, donors, hospitals, clinics, and medical teams, fulfilling its mission to provide life-changing medicines and health supplies for the world’s poorest, most vulnerable populations in 2018.

HBE was hired to plan and execute the 2nd annual Bill Foege Global Health Awards fundraiser and develop comprehensive media strategy to promote the event.

HBE established MAP’s annual event as a significant fundraiser in global health while staying within budget. Significant relationships were built between MAP International, leading corporations and prospective donors including Delta Air Lines, The UPS Foundation, The Arthur M. Blank Foundation, Cox Enterprises, Turner Enterprises and more. In total, the event raised over $120K in medicines and health supplies for people in need and generated an estimated publicity value of $300K with over 90 million impressions in local and national media coverage.

In addition, securing the attendance of key healthcare professionals was a large indicator of success to MAP. The event was filled with leaders from multiple health organizations such as Healthcare Georgia Foundation, CARE USA, Morehouse School of Medicine, The CDC, the Task Force for Global Health, The Carter Center, Emory University and even medical students. HBE’s outreach to health organizations allowed MAP to capture the perfect audience to gather support of their medical programs and increase their visibility in the community.

Since the 2018 event, HBE has continued to plan and execute the Bill Foege Global Health Awards to date. As of 2022, MAP International has delivered $745,372,921 in medicine (prescription and over the counter) and medical supplies (an increase of $119 million from 2021) to 86 countries. That number continues to increase year after year, with help from the awareness of generated by the Bill Foege Global Health Awards.
